This summer Exeter will be able to enjoy a number of engravings by 17th century artist Turner.

‘Turner the Art of Engraving’ will feature a number of exhibitscapturing some of Devon’s most picturesque scenes.

Turner himself never visited Devon until receiving a commission in the summer of 1811 to produce watercolours of the southern coast.

Over a number of years he built up a range of watercolours and pencil sketches of the landscape. These were later incorporated into the metal plate engravings that can be seen today.

The University Fine Art Curator, Gina Cox showed her excitement at hosting the exhibition, stating, “It’s wonderful to see Exeter and how it looked in the 1800s. You can see the crescent and identify areas where it hasn’t changed much.”

She later went on to describe the incredible “painstaking process” that the transfer of Turner’s work to engravings took.

The exhibition, which will be open to the public from 9am to 5pm in the University gallery in Northcote House, will run from 12 May until 4 July.
