Students take £6000 worth of possessions with them to university, a survey has shown.

Research by Endsleigh has shown that the average laptop taken to university by students is worth £641, the average musical instrument is £689 and the value of clothes comes in at £476.

Four out of ten students own a musical instrument, according to Endsleigh, compared to 81% who have a laptop. The laptop was also found to be the top possession of 35% of students, with 20% naming their mobile phone as their top possession, and 14% naming clothes.,

However, students underestimate the value of their possessions significantly, and believe their belongings are worth an average of just £3211.

And four out of ten students don’t have contents insurance. Of these, 40% said it was too expensive, 30% do not believe the risk of theft is great enough to justify it, and 20% forgot to buy it.

Endsleigh spokesperson Rhiannon Harris warned:

“Students are taking a lot of expensive possessions with them to university now and many of these items, such as laptops, MP3 players and mobile phones are an easy target for thieves.”

He added: “Shared student accommodation is often targeted by thieves as it is perceived to be less secure. Students should therefore make sure they lock all doors and windows before leaving the premises and ensure they alert the landlord to any areas where security is a concern.”
