The stereotype of boozy Brits abroad seems unlikely to die down soon, after new figures have shown the number of British holidaymakers getting arrested has increased.

According to the FCO, last year saw a 42% rise in the number of British tourists being arrested in France, and 32% rise in Spain, bringing the total of holidaymakers who experience a brush with the law in Spain to 2,032.

Proportionally however, holidaymakers were much more likely to be arrested in Cyprus, followed by the US and the United Arab Emirates.

The FCO warned that ‘many arrests are due to behaviour caused by excessive drinking’, but also noted that the tough drugs policy in the UAE and strict public decency laws also contributed the high number of arrests.

The figures also showed that almost 700 Brits needed hospital treatment while in Spain, and 1,591 died there. A further 6,710 lost their passports while in the country.

Greece saw 230 arrests, 602 hospitalisations and 28 recorded rapes.

The report also highlighted a high number of Brits going into hospital in Thailand, mainly as a result of motorbike accents, according to the FCO.
