Losing weight requires almost an hour’s exercise a day, five days a week, according to a recent study.

Though government guidelines recommend just 30 minutes of exercise a day, research from Pittsburgh University has shown that overweight women need to combine calorie counting with much more exercise to lose 10% of their weight over two years.

Out of the 201 women who were studied, only a quarter of them were able to achieve this weight loss.

The women were categorized into three groups: one burning 1000 calories a week with moderate exercise, another burning 1000 calories a week with vigorous exercise, and the third burning 2000 calories a week with moderate exercise. Their calorie intake was reduced to just 1200-1500 calories a day.

The study showed that enough exercise to burn 2000 calories each week was required to keep weight off.

Paul Gatley, a professor in exercise and obesity said: “Thirty minutes a day is good for general health, but if you want to lose weight, you need to be doing more, and if you want to sustain weight loss, you need to be doing even more than that”.
