Hundreds of people attempted to attend the V Festival last weekend only to find they had been cheated out of their tickets, it has been reported.

A scam meant that festival-goers were left waiting outside the V Festival sites for tickets that never showed up.

The SOS Master Tickets agency sold the tickets on its website, which is now offline, for up to £180, according to the BBC.

Between 400-800 customers contacted the company before the festival to ask about the whereabouts of their tickets, and were told to meet representatives at the two sites in Staffordshire and Essex.

However the representatives did not appear on the day, and their mobile phones were switched off.

Graham Burns, chairman of the Association of Secondary Ticket Agencies (Asta), said it was a ‘rip-off’ and warned against buying from secondary agencies that had not signed up with Asta.

Bob Angus, director of the V Festival, told the BBC: "We're aware that unofficial outlets claim to have had V Festival tickets for sale.

"As concert promoters, we urge the public not to get tickets from these secondary ticket outlets, whether that be unofficial ticket outlets or through auction sites, as it could well lead to disappointment.

SOS has also sold tickets to future events including the Reading and Leeds festivals, and Madonna and George Michael concerts. Customers now seem unlikely to receive these tickets.
