The peaceful and historic university city of Cambridge is under siege from entrepreneurial villains, it has been reported.

Cambridge students and tourists who fancy a punt among the River Cam are being targeted by ‘gangs’, according to the Daily Mail.

Boys and teenagers, dubbed the ‘punting pirates’, are staging Dick Turpin-style ambushes by waiting on riverbanks or hanging from bridges, then pouncing on the punts. They are then grabbing the poles from the presumably bewildered punters, and demanding a ransom before giving the poles back.

One punter, who saw the ‘yobs’ in action, told the Daily Mail: “They were dive-bombing people, splashing them, and nicking their poles and holding them to ransom. Something must be done to stop it.”

The police have promised to increase their patrols along the River Cam, in an effort to halt the rise of pole-kidnap.
